Climate

Slovenia is located in the moderate climate zone with four seasons. Due to the specifically formed terrain, there are three climatic zones. Alpine climate with distinct influences of Atlantic circulation is in the mountains in the north-western part of the country. In summer temperatures in bays are moderate and winters are cold. The phenomenon of temperature inversion occurs very often in winters and the cold air gathered in valleys and dells causes a significant decrease in temperatures. The climate in the eastern part of Slovenia is continental with hot summers and cold winters. The highest average temperature is in the Adriatic coast and major part of Primorsko region to the Soča Valley. The climate here is Mediterranean with warm, sunny summers and warm and mild winters. The temperature decreases significantly even for longer periods when bora wind, a cold wind which falls down from the mountains, blows. Spring (May and June) and fall (October, November) are the rainy seasons here. January is the coldest month while June is the hottest month. Average temperature in Ljubljana is 10 °C.
